PART ONE: Reading (10 marks)

Two IT-related passages will be provided followed by a number of questions, for example:

  • what is the main idea of the passage?

  • what is the main idea of paragraph X of the passage?

  • True or False?

  • All of the following points/methods/optitions are mentioned EXCEPT..?

  • Finding a specific piece of information from the passage (what, where, who, when, why?)

  • Which word in paragraph X is a synonym of the following "Y"? OR what is the meaning  of X?

  • What does the underlined word mean? 

  • True or False? (Or 'which of the following is true?'/ 'Which of the following is false?')

  • Fact or Opinion? (Or which of the following is a fact? OR Which of the following is an opinion?)

  • What is the meaning of ...?

  • Pronoun reference: what does he/they/their/his/that/it/them/both/each/both etc. refer to?

PART TWO: Language Use (15 marks)

PART THREE: Writing (15 marks)

You will either write a whole for-and-against essay on a given topic.

OR

You will have two tasks

Task 1: Writing a procedure paragraph (as in Test 1. See Theme 2 writing part for more exercises)

Task 2 : You will be given an IT-related topic and asked to write a for and against essay (4 paragraphs as in the examples provided under Theme 4 coverage)

Writing Grading scheme

  • Do you have four paragraphs?

  • Introduction: Three  sentences in total: 2 sentences on on the topic (relevant, proper grammar and spelling), last sentence: thesis statement (e.g. There are several advantages and disadvantages for -ing.... .) 

  • 1st body paragraph: Five sentences in total: signal to begin, two or three good points, complete sentences, proper grammar and spelling, capitalization, signals inside where needed. Do you have at least one detail for one of the points?

  • 2nd body paragraph: Five sentences in total: signal to begin , two or three good points, complete sentences, proper grammar and spelling, capitalization, signals inside where needed. Do you have at least one detail for one of the points?

  • Conclusion: Three sentences in total: a signal, two sentences summarizing the essay. One sentence reflecting your personal opinion (or advice/ warning). 

Now

  • Check that each sentence is complete: Subject + verb (+complement)

  • Check verb tenses

  • Check the prepositions (in, on, at)

  • Check your articles (a, an, the, 0)

  • Check capitalisations (beginning of sentences, proper nouns, names of companies, countries, nationalities, rivers and seas, etc.)

  • Check -s for plural nouns and -s for present simple third person singular (e.g. it has, the programme consists of, many customers, ..)

  • All sentences are complete?

  • Did you use signals (transition words) to show

    • type of paragraph​

    • order of points

    • when you are providing an example

    • when you are concluding​

OR: The writing Part will only have one question. You will be given a topic and asked to write a complete for-and-against essay.
